SACRAMENTO (June 7, 2018) – The Board of State and Community Corrections today approved funding for two grants: one to help system-involved young people enrich their parenting skills, and the other to help inmates overcome substance abuse and related problems.

The Proud Parenting and Residential Substance Abuse Treatment programs are two of the agency’s smallest grants, but the potential impacts of both are big. Funding for both begins in July.

“We are eager to see in what ways our local partners use these funds to improve lives,” said BSCC Chair Linda Penner.

Funding for Proud Parenting historically has been appropriated at $835,000 annually in the California State Budget Act. The three-year grant is designed to improve outcomes of the next generation by delivering parenting services to young and expectant parents who were involved in the criminal justice or child welfare systems.

Recipients include both public agencies and community-based organizations. They are: Encompass Community Services of Santa Cruz County; Imperial County Probation Department; the San Benito County Office of Education; South Bay Community Services of San Diego; Nati’s House of Orange County; Champions Recovering Alternative Programs of Kings County; the Tulare County Office of Education and Fathers & Families of San Joaquin. The RSAT program provides a total of $942,109 in federal funding in the first year for in-custody treatment services. Only counties with adult jail detention facilities were eligible to apply. Successful applicants agreed to provide evidence-based cognitive, behavioral, social, vocational and other skills to solve substance-use disorder and related problems. Counties had to agree to provide drug testing and aftercare services.

The three-year awards are dependent upon continued federal funding. The successful applicants are: Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department ($314,046); Kern County Sheriff’s Office ($267,820); and Tulare County Sheriff’s Office ($314,000).
