BSCC Sets Emergency Meeting for July 16

SACRAMENTO (July 14, 2020) – The Board of State and Community Corrections will convene an emergency meeting at 10 a.m. Thursday July 16 to consider the immediate allocation of federal funding to provide housing for up to 8,000 people being released from state prisons due to COVID-19.

The Administration has requested that $15 million of the $58.5 million in federal Coronavirus Emergency Supplemental Funding awarded to the BSCC help address the temporary housing needs of the people who will be released throughout August to create physical distance inside state prisons and stem the spread of the virus.

If the Board approves, the funds would be transferred to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation to quickly leverage existing contracts that can provide emergency housing.

The Board will consider public comment and determine priorities for the remaining portion of the grant at its September meeting. The CESF program is administered by the U.S. Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Assistance and is designed to help mitigate state and local spending on the Coronavirus pandemic.
